<span style="font-size: large;">Yep I missed last month, but I'm not going to beat myself down; it has been a crazy time. Everyone in my immediate family moved at least once this summer and my boyfirend and I changed not only cities, but provinces. What?! I know. Now, we're calling The Hammer, otherwise known as Hamilton, Ontario, our new home. With that came a whole set of things to do, prepare, adjust to, and deal with and it's happening. <b>Point being- I'm a genius. Really.</b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Everyday, we get things done.</b> Big things, small things, little things that have been nagging us for months or that suddenly came into our minds. We get sh*t done, we figure it out, in our ways, at our own pace. We're all great at something (and we're not so bad at the rest). This month, celebrate that. Yeah, I'm sure there are things you want to improve, we've all got them, but <b>give yourself a pat on the back for your awesome geniusness. I know I will. Here are a few of my strategies for doing this</b></span><br />

<li><span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>Keep track of the things You do</b>.</u> My agenda is full of stuff to get done with some of them crossed out, but lately I've started also tracking that things that I did; the things that weren't planned but that I accomplished. <b>High five yourself! </b></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>Take Before and After Pictures.</b></u> When I moved in, my room was covered in loud stripes that threatened my sleep. It just wasn't my thing. I painted them right out and got my room a little calmer. We also had to cut my boyfriend's bedframe in half and put it back together in the room for doorway related reasons- comical and ingenius. It's super easy to forget that accomplishment, except I've got the proof. (Gotta love cameras in phones and duct tape)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<li><span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>Keep Records.</b></u><b> </b>Like I mentioned in my post on <a href="http://charlottejoyliving.blogspot.ca/2013/07/food-journals-powerful-tool.html" target="_blank">food journals</a>, <b>it's important to recognize your good habits and keeping a record can make that easier.</b> I recommend this for anything where you are likely to lose track of your
awesome progress; progress in things like fat loss, learning how to bake pies, jack-hammer, or type faster, ANYTHING. It feels great to look back and see the
wonderful job you did.

<li><span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>Just Remember That You're Awesome.</b></u> Even if I don't remember exactly what I did, I try to trust myself enough to know that I get the job done. <b>I'm smart, I work hard, and I rock. I'm sure I did/am doing something completely awesome.</b> It's totally okay to tell yourself that or add any other positive adjective you want in there. </span> </li>

While concentrating on throwing a frisbee in the general direction of the person may seem like a silly thing to concentrate on, it's my challenge. It fits where I'm at right now. What's my point? <b>We've all got to rise to our own challenges. </b></span></div>

If walking to the corner store is your challenge, be as proud as the cross-country walker as you stride.</b></span></div>

I love to spend my free time on a nice day walking about, lazing on the grass, and playing in the park. However, when the weather's iffy, it's another story. I wrote recently about watching less TV, but on those days curling up with a movie is tempting. Staying in and cooking, reading, or doing something else fun is definitely an option.</span><br>

<span style="font-size: large;">For a communal bike system like Bixi, I learned<b> I need to check that the brakes work, that the tire pressure is firm, and that I can actually adjust the seat before I ride off.</b> You can do this with a few simple pokes and prods of the bike. It takes less than 20 seconds, but in a pinch, you really want to make sure of at least the brakes; safety first!</span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-size: large;"><b>For the brakes,</b> I always check to make sure that they don't get stuck when I squeeze them and that, when squeezed, the pads actually grip the wheel. </span></li></ul><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://bicycling.about.com/od/bikemaintenance/a/fiveeasytuneups.htm" target="_blank">For a more complete check-up for your own bike, about.com has practical and simple information.</a></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I like to explore the area around me when I'm in a leisurely mood, but if I'm in a hurry, it's nice to know where things are. There are definitely more than a few ways to know where you're going.</span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-size: large;">One app that works well for me is<a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.homelinux.penecoptero.android.citybikes.app&hl=en" target="_blank"> CityBikes.</a> If you're using a communal bike system, it's a nice way to know where the stations are and how many bikes and spaces are there. Great when you've got to grab a bike or find out where to park. I've only used it in Montreal, but apparently it works in other cities as well. </span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://montreal.bixi.com/" target="_blank">The good old Bixi map.</a> If you don't have access to a smart phone, you can check the website before you go, not only will you see where the bikes are, but you can get directions between the stations. </span></span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://maps.google.ca/" target="_blank">Google has integrated biking directions into their maps</a> and it's handy-dandy. <span style="font-size: large;">So, of course it makes sense to listen. However, if you're like me, you do that thing where if you've said "what" once or twice, too bad, you don't get to know. Or you laugh at jokes that you're not really listening to, or if something is over your head, you don't always ask. This month, no more. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"></span><span style="font-size: large;">It's good to listen; we actually know what the other person is trying to tell us, what we're agreeing to, or what we're laughing at. Pretty important stuff. <b>But, sometimes it's tough. So that's half of my thirty day challenge- to try to really listen to what people are saying and, if I can't, to not be in the conversation. </b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The other half of the challenge is that on top of me listening, I'd like others to listen to me. Not that they generally don't or that I can control other people's behaviour, but <b>one thing I can do is make sure that when I say something, I really say it.</b> If I have something to say, I'll try to say it clearly without ambiguity and if I am uncertain, be clear about that too. Bottom Line: <b>People can't listen to what you don't say, so I'm gonna speak up. </b></span><br />
